I stand at the sandy shores
Watching eternity lap at my feet
Wanting with my whole heart
To take this final leap
To let the waves carry me
—Onward, forever—
Instead of simply letting
Eternity tickle my toes
At the mercy of a tide
That ebbs and flows
To finally press my lips
To those of the horizon
Instead of simply glimpsing
With open-mouthed awe
The closing of a distance
That I cannot yet cross
To reach out and touch the Sun
Always and forever
Instead of simply basking
In sunlight that will fade
At the mercy of a night
Whose shadows still pervade
I long for this union
Once and for all
I’m on the edge of the ocean
But there’s another call:
Though I desire forever
And though it is now
There is a not yet
That keeps me aground
Because there are people to love
And hands to hold
And tears to wipe
When the sand grows cold
And laughter to cherish
And sandy feet to wash
And sleepy eyes to open
To the sight of it all:
To the vastness of the horizon
Beyond these very sandy shores
Where the embrace of the ocean
Holds us
—Onward, together—
In the eternity of more
